At Brockton, the outdoors is not an afterthought – it’s at the heart of everything we do.
We are lucky to have exceptional outdoor spaces: a large woodland for exploring and den building, an outdoor classroom for lessons in all seasons, a playing field for sports and games, a stream perfect for boat racing, and a range of exciting play equipment. These unique facilities mean our children are not just learning about the world – they are learning in it.
Every week, our pupils take part in outdoor learning sessions that ignite their curiosity and inspire creativity. Whether they are taking part in Forest School activities, investigating nature in science lessons, working together to solve challenges or simply enjoying free play, children develop confidence, independence and a sense of wonder for the natural world.
Outdoor Play – Learning Through Adventure
Play is powerful – and we make sure our children have plenty of opportunities for it. Our outdoor areas are designed to encourage imagination, problem-solving and collaboration. Children climb, balance, build, dig and create, taking safe risks and learning new skills along the way. Free play is an essential part of every school day, helping children develop friendships, regulate their emotions and return to class ready to learn.
The benefits for children
Spending time outdoors is proven to support children’s academic, social, and emotional development. At our school, we see the difference every day:
- Academic growth – Outdoor experiences make learning meaningful, memorable, and exciting. Just a change of scenery can be enough to re-engage children and spark their curiosity!
- Social skills – Working together in open spaces encourages teamwork, problem-solving, and communication. The outdoors also helps our children build an awareness of risk and develop personal responsibility.
- Physical wellbeing – Fresh air and active play help children develop strength and coordination, and sets the course for a future healthy lifestyle.
- Emotional wellbeing – Being outdoors reduces stress and promote a sense of calm. Being faced with challenges like muddy conditions, tricky tasks or changing weather helps build resilience.
